Check all four tires rather than one. Front tires on a front-wheel drive car wear faster because they handle steering, braking, and power delivery at the same time. 

Tire Age: Why a Six-Year-Old Tire Fails With Plenty of Tread Left 

Rubber ages whether the car moves or stays parked. Heat and oxygen break down the compound over time, and the bond between the tread and the steel belts weakens from the inside where you cannot see it. This is how a tire with 8/32 of tread throws its tread at highway speed. 

The NHTSA tire safety guidance notes that vehicle and tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires that are six to ten years old regardless of treadwear. Cars that sit for long stretches, weekend vehicles, and spare tires carry the highest exposure since the tread stays deep while the rubber keeps aging. 

Reading the DOT Code on Your Sidewall 

Every tire carries a DOT Tire Identification Number on the sidewall. The last four digits give you the manufacturing date. A code ending in 2419 means the twenty-fourth week of 2019. Some tires show the full code on the inner sidewall, so a look from underneath or a lift at the shop finds it. 

Drivers buying used cars in Edison, Metuchen, and Highland Park should check these dates before the purchase. A three-year-old car can carry tires manufactured two years before assembly, and a dealer swap can put older stock on a newer vehicle.

Under N.J.A.C. 13:20-32.19, tread depth must measure at least 2/32 of an inch, and tires with wear indicators visible in two adjacent major grooves at three points around the tire get rejected. Commercial vehicles, buses, taxis, limousines, and jitneys face a stricter rule, with front tires required to hold at least 4/32 of an inch. State law also treats a tire as unsafe when any ply or cord shows, when a bump or bulge affects the structure, or when a break has been repaired with a boot or patch. 

Inspectors look at more than depth. Sidewall damage, exposed cords, mismatched tires on the same axle, and incorrect tire size for the vehicle all cause a failure. Should You Replace Two Tires or All Four? 

The honest answer depends on your drivetrain and the condition of the remaining pair. 

All-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles need matched rolling circumference across all four corners. A difference beyond the manufacturer tolerance, sometimes as small as 2/32 to 4/32 of tread, forces the center differential or transfer case to work against itself. Repair bills for those components run far past the price of two extra tires. 

Front-wheel and rear-wheel drive cars can take a pair, though two rules apply. Buy the same brand, model, size, and speed rating as the existing pair. Mount the new pair on the rear axle regardless of which wheels drive the car, because deeper tread at the back prevents oversteer and spin during wet braking.
